The Battle of Belleau Wood (June 1918) marked the first major U.S. engagement in WWI, boosting Allied morale. The U.S. 2nd Division, especially the 4th Marine Brigade, showed notable bravery, leading the French to rename the area in their honor and award the Croix de Guerre.
As the Germans advanced on the Marne River, they met the U.S. 2nd and 3rd Divisions. Despite French troops retreating, Marine Captain Lloyd W. Williams famously declared, "Retreat? Hell, we just got here!" The Americans held their ground on 4 June and launched an offensive on 6 June, facing heavy losses but eventually expelling the Germans after six attacks on 26 June. They also secured nearby villages.
